I think the whole point of this article is flawed, not the design of the Satio. To compare a camera phone with a professional DSLR is futile, nobody would expect a cell phone to compete. The fact of the matter is that the Satio’s camera, especially with the xenon flash, takes better photos than a large number of budget compact cameras and probably all camera phones. As a matter of fact on average my Satio takes better outdoor daytime photos than my wife’s Nikon Coolpix S230 (not sure if there is something wrong with the thing but it struggles to focus regardless of light).

@ martyn james

can you please then post some pictures with flash?
I am considering Satio as my next phone but have some doubts about xenon flash performance.

Thanks!! :)

I agree with this article, my satio takes ok pictures outside in bright light but the moment I try to take a picture indoors the noise is awfull no matter what I do to the settings.
My iphone camera was massively better as an all round camera, also something I would add about the satio is that it really doesn't like shaky hands which I have.. it comes with OIS but it cant be used while the flash is active and it is also supprisingly sensitive.

I would highly recommend looking else where because given the chance I would trade my satio for a different phone in a heart beat.

Personally, I have found the picture quality on my Sony Satio excellent. Really pleased with how they print and appear on screen

Thanks for the links to the photos. They look good but that doesn’t invalidate my concerns. We don’t know the percentage of images that turn out good and how many discarded ones there are with exposure and other problems during a an average photo session. A high end DSLR will nail most shots taken.

I also checked the Exif information for the pictures and most of them are taken with ISO 80, and a few with ISO 100. If you need higher ISO I think that the image quality will deteriorate significantly.

Theory is one thing, practice is another.

Take a look at these pictures taken by the Satio. This is the best camera phone so far.

I do agree more MPx doesn't mean better quality but you will find phone manafacturers also use better lens in their higher megapixel camera's which explains why most 12 or 8 MPx camera phones offer better image quality than 5MPx.

Words of wisdom in a sea of delusion.

I have felt the same way for years, beginning with Digital Cameras and now with Smartphones. As I told a friend (who didn't listen) photography is all about light! And to grab more light you have a bigger CCD or a wider aperture lens (or both if its a DSLR).

Actually, I just got a Samsung Pixon12. The first thing I did was reduce the image size to 4MP. I assume that the phone still uses the whole CCD, but that it reduces the saved image size down, in that way I would benefit from the extra resolution of this over-packed CCD. Is that not true, isn't that how it works? In that case, you do get a benefit from a higher resolution CCD, even if it is the same size.

but ofcourse!
how can you expect that a tiny cell phone camera sensor will deliver good results like dslr cameras? O_O
it hardly matches compact cameras!
it wont match dslr anytime soon...
the sensors are small because the lack of room... you cant put a dslr camera sensor in a cell phone because there is absolutly no room!
you are being silly yourself for trying to compare a cameraphone to the dslrs.. wich are the best type of cameras you can find today!
O_O
besides, satio delivers quit good results
here is a sample from satio's early to mid early prototype:
http://www.gsmarena.com/showpic.php3?sImg=reviewsimg/sony-ericsson-idou/camera/gsmarena_019.jpg

btw can you explain me what a focal length is?
satio has 5.9mm focal length...
is it better than 4.9?
what are the advantages..?
